New Katowice – Ostrava line. The STH company signed another agreement for the feasibility study

Today, the Solidarity Transport Hub company has concluded a contract for a feasibility study concerning the construction of the Polish section of the new railway line between Katowice and Ostrava. As a result of that, trains will reach, among others, Jastrzębie-Zdrój with its 90-thousand population, which is today the largest city in Poland without rail access. The route is a part of the joint railway investment of the Visegrad Group countries between Warsaw, Brno (with a link to Prague), Bratislava and Budapest.

As part of the construction of the Polish section of the railway line between Katowice and Ostrava, approx. 75 km of the new line will be constructed. The project will cover the section of the future railway line between Katowice and the border with the Czech Republic and the Jastrzębie-Zdrój – Wodzisław Śląski section, including the branch to the planned Jastrzębie-Zdrój Centrum station and the links towards RybnikandWodzisław Śląski.

We keep our word. This is another of the agreements we have signed over the last weeks. Thanks to this line, we will provide services for Jastrzębie-Zdrój, i.e. the largest Polish city without access to the rail today. The Katowice – Ostrava section is the first to receive EU co-financing by winning competition with other European projects

The Katowice – Ostrava section is an important section of High-Speed Rail which, on the one hand, willincrease the attractiveness of the region and, on the other hand, will connect the countries of the Visegrad Group. On the one hand, it will have a local effect for Silesia and, on the other hand, it will serve as an example of the international character of the STH railway investments. We are in constant contact with infrastructure managers from V4 countries, together we have been creating a HSR connection between Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary

The subject of the agreement is a feasibility study for the planned railway line. The STH company considered the tender submitted by the consortium with Egis Poland as the leader as the most advantageous one, amounting to almost netPLN 11 million. Selection was determined by the price (in 70%) and the staff experience (in the remaining 30%).

According to the programme, the first construction works are to start in 2024, and the section of the line connecting Katowice with Ostrava will be handed over for operation before the end of 2030. The line shall be designed so that it will be possible to travel by the fastest passenger trains at the speed up to 250 km/h.

The STEŚ contractor will have 11 months for the preparation. The performance and settlement of the entire agreement may take five months longer, as the contract also includes geological documentation and maps for design purposes.

In the Śląskie Voivodeship, as part of the STH railway programme, a total of 100 km of new railway lines will be constructed by the STH company, and next 246 km will be modernised by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe.

These investments will ensure shortening of the travel to Warsaw from Katowice to 1 hour and 40 minutes and from Bielska-Biała to 1 hour and 55 minutes. From Jastrzębie-Zdrój and Rybnik we will reach the capital in 2 hours, and from Częstochowaand Gliwice – in 2 hours and 10 min. Moreover, capacity for regional and freight services will increase on existing railway lines.

The railway line constructed by Poland will be extended on the Czech side to Ostrava. Thanks to this, it will be possible to travel from Katowice to Ostrava in only 35 minutes, i.e. by an hour shorter than currently. The STH company is in constant contact with the Správa železnic enterprise, the railway infrastructure manager in the Czech Republic. Both parties jointly identified two potential locations for the crossing of the HSR across the border and the preferred route of the border sections.

In Poland, the route is part of the trans-European TEN-T corridor. It runs from Warsaw through the Central Trunk Line (CMK) under modernisation by PKP PLK and Katowice to the near-border Ostrava. The line is part of joint investments of the Visegrad Group countries grouped in the HSR V4 project, aimed at increasing the travel standard and reducing the travel times between Warsaw, Brno (with a link to Prague), Bratislava and Budapest.

The preparation of the Project Definition Documentation takes place using co-financing of over PLN 7 million which the STH company received in 2019 from the EU CEF (Connecting Europe Facility).
